Why Hydroponics?
We are empowering women to fight food poverty with hydroponics. The UK has one of the highest levels of food poverty in Europe severely impacting the health and wellbeing of millions of adults and children. A sharp increase in the cost of living has made even the most basic foods less affordable with many families experiencing severe financial and mental stress and struggling to survive.
What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics is the science of growing plants without soil. It has proven to be a highly efficient and easy way to grow food. It is soilless and can be implemented in many small urban spaces to grow a range of vegetables using low-cost natural nutrients.
The ability to grow indoors in a simple manageable way can help prevent hunger and food poverty for low income families. Small urban systems are easy to learn and understand and does not require specialist knowledge.
Hydroponics offers women and families a simple and low-cost way to set-up their own source of food in most types of residential or social spaces. Families can generate a source of food in the smallest of of space and even without gardens. One square foot of space has the potential to provide daily up to half a kg of fresh, organic vegetables year round.
Hydroponics can provide a source of income and support local economies. With the high cost of food families can sell fresh vegetables local to small shops and restaurants.
Hydroponics and regularly working with plants has been associated with positive mental health. Pesticide-free plants mean nutritious healthy food
Women can develop new skills and knowledge in a rapidly growing field and gain marketable skills in a range of hydroponic specialisms
Growing plants locally without pesticides and efficient water use reduces harmful impact on the environment and climate change
Our volunteers are learning about hydroponics and helping to create video tutorials in several languages
We want to secure a local space to grow vegetables and support local food banks and families facing hardship
